March Pumps

March Pumps - Originator of the centrifugal sealless magnetic drive pump. Magnetic drive pumps (mag drive) refers to the coupling between the wet end and the motor. In traditional centrifugal pumps the wet end is sealed with a mechanical seal but for some applications where leaks need to be avoided mag drive is the optimum solution. Mag drive offers the advantage of the wet end being completely separate from the motor because the wet end is driven via a contact free magnetic coupling.

Centrifugal sealless magnetic drive pumps are ideal for chemical transfer, heat transfer, ice makers, industrial, medical systems, marine, acids & alkali, solar and OEM applications.

Pump & Machinery carries extensive stock of pumps and parts. Most of the Mag Drive pumps supplied in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands are used with chemicals or corrosive fluids.

March-Self Priming Pumps

March Manufacturing began in 1954 as a job shop performing precision machining for the aircraft industry.  In 1955, March developed its first pump for removing cooling coil condensation.  Our first magnetic drive pump came out in 1962.  In the late 60’s, March ceased operating in the aircraft industry to concentrate on pumps.

Originally located in Skokie, IL, a suburb of Chicago, March moved in 1968 to Glenview, IL to a larger building to better accomodate the increasing demand for sealless pumps.

The company was founded by William Zimmermann.  Since the beginning, March has been managed by the Zimmermann family, and  continues today.

March-Turbine Pumps

Series HTP-C-SS March Turbine Mag Drive Pump

The March Pumps HTP-C-SS Turbine Pump is a mag drive pump. Capabilities include generating a max flow of 3 Gallons Per Minute (GPM) at 5' (Feet). Maximum head is 84' (Feet)  or around 36 PSI. Standard wet end materials that come into contact with the solution is composed of 316 SS (Stainless Steel), Ryton, Viton and Ceramic. The inlet connection is 1/2" and the outlet is 1/2". The turbine pump is powered by a 1 Phase 230 Volt 50/60 HZ motor.  Maximum internal pressure the pump can tolerate is 300 PSI. The maximum liquid temperature is 212 Fahrenheit or 100 Celsius. Marchs' Turbine mag drive pump is capable of handling mildly or highly corrosive chemicals, acids and solvents.

March Beer Pumps

The standard brewing pump for many years now has been the March series of pumps. The original standard was the 809 pump but the current (most popular) model is the March 815 model. Its a high temperature pump to handle boiling water that moves approximately 7 gallons/minute. It has a magnetic drive head which allows it to handle lower flow rates, and most often a ball valve is fastened to the output so you can vary the flow of wort.

The pump comes in both plastic and stainless steel head versions, and you can in fact remove the head by removing four screws to either clean it or replace it. Some brewers prefer the stainless steel head which can be easier to clean and sanitize. The standard model has 1/2″ MPT connectors on the inlet and outlet. The pump currently retails for around $180 and a bit more for the stainless version.

The pump is not self-priming, which means you need to have some way to fill the pump with wort or water before use. Most brewers do this by adding a small bleed valve on the inlet side so enough wort/water is in the tube to prime the pump on startup. It can be very difficult to prime the pump without the extra bleed valve.

March pumps are typically very reliable and reasonably affordable. Their main limitations are in needing to disassemble the pump to fully clean it and also the fact that they are not self-priming.
